Strength Training for Women: 5 Myths Our Coaches Hear Every Week

2 min read

As a women owned studio in Jubilee Hills, HFM Club trains a lot of women who are lifting weights for the first time. The same five worries come up again and again. Here is the truth behind each one.

Myth 1: Lifting weights will make me bulky

Building large muscles takes years of very specific training and eating. For most women, strength training creates a firmer, more toned shape and helps the body burn more energy at rest.

Myth 2: Cardio is better for losing weight

Cardio burns calories during the session. Strength training changes your body composition, keeps muscle while you lose fat, and keeps your metabolism higher. The best plans combine both, with strength as the base.

Myth 3: I need to lose weight before I start lifting

You can start at any size and any fitness level. Your coach scales every exercise to where you are today and progresses it safely.

Myth 4: Weights are bad for joints

Done with good technique and the right progression, strength training strengthens the muscles and connective tissue around your joints. It is one of the best ways to protect knees, hips and back as you age.

Myth 5: Strength training is not safe during or after pregnancy

With medical clearance and a qualified coach, appropriate strength work can support you through pregnancy and recovery. This is a specialist area, so make sure your trainer is trained in pre and post natal programming.
